The Chairman of Badagry Local Government Area, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, has declared seven days of mourning for the late Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, who passed away on Monday, January 12, 2026.

Hunpe made the announcement through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine, noting that the declaration was made with the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

“With profound sorrow, I officially announce the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom,” Hunpe said. “He peacefully joined his ancestors after a long, illustrious, and impactful reign devoted to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage.”

He described the late monarch as a living bridge between the past and the future, a revered custodian of tradition, and a moral compass to his people.

“In solemn recognition of his life and enduring legacy, I hereby declare seven days of mourning, during which the people of Badagry are enjoined to reflect on his selfless leadership, timeless values, and lifelong devotion to Badagry, Lagos State, and Nigeria,” Hunpe added.

The chairman extended condolences to the Council of Obas and Chiefs, the royal family, and the entire Badagry community.

Prominent Nigerians, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Sanwo-Olu, also expressed deep sorrow.

In a message issued through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Sanwo-Olu described the Akran’s death as a painful loss to Badagry, Lagos State, and the nation, marking the end of an era defined by wisdom, cultural preservation, and dedication to development.

The late Menu Toyi I, who ascended the throne on April 23, 1977, served as Permanent Vice-Chairman of Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs until his passing, completing nearly 49 years on the throne.
