The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered an immediate halt to the demolition of structures in Makoko, adjoining waterfront communities in Yaba Local Government Area of the state.

The directive was issued on Tuesday following a meeting between lawmakers and representatives of the affected communities at the Lateef Jakande Auditorium in the Assembly Complex, Alausa, Ikeja.

Announcing the decision, the Chairman of the ad hoc committee set up by the Speaker of the House, Noheem Adams, said the Assembly resolved that all ministries and agencies involved in the demolition of Makoko, Oko-Agbon, and Shogunro communities should suspend the exercise until further notice.

Adams also assured residents that those whose properties have already been demolished will be compensated, adding that any task force constituted in the future must involve community members.

“As your representatives, we assure you that the demolition will be stopped, and those affected will be compensated,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the communities, one of the traditional leaders, Baale Isaac Gunmayon, commended the House for its intervention, saying the resolution reflected the wishes of the people and restored hope.

The demolition exercise, which began in December 2025, had generated widespread criticism from residents, human rights groups, and legal practitioners, following reports of displacement.

The Lagos State Government, however, has maintained that the demolition was carried out in the interest of residents of the waterfront communities
