North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un has been re-elected as secretary-general of the ruling Workers’ Party, securing another five years at the helm of the country’s only political party.

The election took place on Sunday during the Ninth Party Congress, held every five years. Central Committee members were also elected, and some party rules were reportedly amended, although details were not disclosed.

Fifteen Years of Rule – Kim has been the country’s supreme leader since 2011, following the death of his father, Kim Jong Il. In 2019, North Korea amended its constitution to grant Kim “monolithic” control over all state affairs, formally establishing him as head of state.

Setting New Goals
During the congress, Kim reviewed the party’s achievements over the past five years and outlined new priorities for the next term. He called for urgent action to boost economic development, improve living standards, and transform all sectors of state and society.

“Our Party faces heavy historic tasks of boosting economic construction and the people’s standard of living,” Kim said, according to the state news agency KCNA. “We must fight persistently without allowing even a moment of stagnation.”

Balancing Economy and Military Might
Despite North Korea’s traditional focus on nuclear weapons and military strength, Kim emphasized the need to strengthen the economy, while keeping security and defense a top priority. Ahead of the congress, he unveiled dozens of nuclear-capable rocket launchers, describing them as “wonderful” and “attractive.”

Kim also said the country had overcome its “worst difficulties” in recent years and is entering a new stage of optimism and confidence.

Looking Ahead Officials attending the congress, including Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui, echoed Kim’s message of development and perseverance. Analysts say the leadership is signaling both continuity in military strategy and a stronger push for domestic economic progress.
