Former Manchester United captain, Roy Keane, has commended the club’s recent resurgence following their thrilling 2 – 3 victory over Arsenal, but insists that interim manager Michael Carrick is not the right choice to take charge on a permanent basis.

Keane made his position known during a post-match analysis on Sky Sports after United’s dramatic win at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

While acknowledging the team’s improved performances under Carrick, Keane maintained that short-term success should not cloud the club’s long-term ambitions.

“Two great performances, but anyone can win two games,” Keane said. “If United win every game until the end of the season, I still wouldn’t be giving him the job. I still wouldn’t be convinced he’s the man for the job.”

The former midfielder stressed that Manchester United require a more experienced, proven manager, capable of restoring the club to its former dominance.

“They need a bigger and better manager. The size of the club and the challenges they face over the next few years, you want a manager who you feel can get them winning league titles,” he said.

Questioning Carrick’s capacity to lead the club to major honours, Keane added, “Are we going to sit here and believe Michael Carrick can get United winning league titles? It’s not enough for me. I don’t believe he is the man to get them winning league titles.”

Despite his reservations, Keane praised United’s performance against Arsenal, noting a renewed confidence and composure in the team.

“Considering where they are and where they have been, they had a bit of swagger, calmness to their play,” he said.

He highlighted the impact of substitute players and the quality of goals scored, describing the atmosphere among travelling United supporters as reminiscent of the club’s glory days.

“Two brilliant strikes and players off the bench had a big influence. You see the United fans in the corner, it’s a bit like the old days,” Keane added.
