Two children from the same family have been killed in an Israeli drone strike in northern Gaza after the attack hit civilians gathering firewood near Kamal Adwan Hospital, according to medical sources in the territory.
Health officials in Gaza said the strike occurred on Saturday as residents searched for fuel to survive harsh winter conditions following prolonged shortages of electricity and cooking gas.
Many displaced families are currently living in makeshift shelters made of thin canvas and plastic sheets, offering little protection from strong winds and cold nights, with temperatures falling to about 10 degrees Celsius.
Aid agencies and local authorities say deliveries of essential relief materials, including tents, mobile shelters and repair supplies, remain heavily restricted despite the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas in October.
Gaza’s Health Ministry said Israeli military actions have continued almost daily since the ceasefire took effect on October 10, with hundreds of reported violations.
According to the Ministry, at least 481 Palestinians have been killed and more than 1,200 injured in attacks since October 11, while total casualties since the start of the war in October 2023 stand at over 71,000 dead and more than 170,000 wounded.
In a related development, the Health Ministry said another infant died from cold-related complications at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, bringing the number of children who have died from exposure during the current winter season to 10.
Meanwhile, United States envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were in Israel on Saturday for talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with discussions centred on the Gaza ceasefire and post-war reconstruction plans.
Washington recently announced a proposal for a large-scale rebuilding project in Gaza, including residential housing, technology facilities and coastal infrastructure, as part of efforts to stabilize the ceasefire, begin recovery in the devastated enclave.
