Iraq have secured qualification for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 40 years after defeating Bolivia 2-1 in an intercontinental playoff in Mexico on Tuesday.

The hard-fought victory seals Iraq’s place as the 48th and final team at the tournament, marking their first appearance since the 1986 finals, also hosted in Mexico.

Despite disrupted preparations caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the Iraqi team delivered a resilient performance. They will now compete in Group I alongside France, Senegal, and Norway.

Goals from Ali Al-Hamadi and captain Aymen Hussein ensured a historic win for the Lions of Mesopotamia, under the guidance of Australian coach Graham Arnold. Arnold had earlier called for a postponement of the match due to travel and logistical challenges linked to the regional crisis.

The team endured a demanding journey to Mexico, travelling for three days from Baghdad, including an overland crossing into Jordan, before arriving at the playoff venue.

Iraq, however, showed no signs of fatigue as they started strongly, taking the lead in the ninth minute. Luton Town striker Ali Al-Hamadi headed home from a well-delivered corner by Amir Al-Ammari.

Bolivia responded in the 38th minute, with Moises Paniagua finishing clinically after a setup from Ramiro Vaca to level the score.

But Iraq regained control early in the second half. Substitute Marko Lawk-Farji delivered a precise cross that was expertly finished by Aymen Hussein to restore the lead.

Bolivia mounted sustained pressure in the closing stages, pushing for an equaliser that would force extra time. However, Iraq’s disciplined defence held firm through nine minutes of stoppage time to secure a memorable victory.

The result marks a significant milestone for Iraqi football, achieved under challenging circumstances, and signals their return to the global stage after four decades.
