Iran’s armed forces have issued a stern warning to the United States, saying any military confrontation would carry serious consequences for Washington.

Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, questioned recent statements attributed to US President Donald Trump, suggesting contradictions between talk of negotiations and threats of force.

“If Trump intends war, why does he speak of negotiations?” Mousavi said, warning that any battle with Iran would become a “lesson” for the US leader and would leave him unable to bully on the global stage.

“He will enter a battle that will serve as a lesson, the outcome of which will ensure he no longer blusters on the world stage,” Mousavi added.

The remarks come amid heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington over regional security issues and Iran’s missile and nuclear programmes.

Observers say the exchange of sharp rhetoric underscores the fragile state of relations between both countries, with fears that miscalculation could further escalate tensions.
