Iran has appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as the country’s new Supreme Leader – following the assassination of his father, Ali Khamenei, during joint military strikes by the United States and Israel.

The 56-year-old cleric was named successor on Sunday by the powerful Assembly of Experts, the body responsible for appointing the leader of the Islamic Republic.

His appointment comes amid escalating regional tensions after the killing of his father triggered a widening conflict across the Middle East.

Key Iranian institutions, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the country’s armed forces, quickly pledged loyalty to the new leader.

Senior officials also voiced support for the decision. Ali Larijani called for unity around Mojtaba Khamenei, while parliament speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf described loyalty to the new leader as a “religious and national duty.”

Rising influence behind the scenes:

Although Mojtaba Khamenei has never held elected office, he has long been considered one of the most influential figures within Iran’s ruling establishment.

For decades, he operated within the inner circle of the former Supreme Leader, built strong ties with the IRGC, one of the most powerful institutions in the country.

Political observers say his selection suggests that hard-line factions within Iran’s leadership remain firmly in control, potentially reducing the chances of negotiations with Western powers in the short term.

Regional tensions remain high:

The elder Khamenei, who led Iran for 37 years after succeeding Ruhollah Khomeini, was killed on February 28 during US-Israeli strikes on Tehran at the start of the ongoing conflict.

The war has already triggered attacks on key infrastructure and raised fears of a prolonged regional crisis.

Meanwhile, US President, Donald Trump has warned that Washington will closely monitor developments in Iran’s leadership, while Iranian officials insist that the country’s future will be determined solely by its people.

Analysts say Mojtaba Khamenei now faces the difficult task of leading Iran through one of the most challenging periods in its modern history as the conflict continues to escalate.
