Iran has declared that the armies of European Union member states that designated the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization will themselves be treated as terrorist groups.
Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, made the statement on Sunday while addressing lawmakers in Tehran. Members of parliament were seen wearing Revolutionary Guard uniforms in a show of support for the elite military force.
The European Union on Thursday formally listed the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, marking a sharp shift in its approach towards Iran’s leadership following a violent crackdown on nationwide protests.
Qalibaf accused European governments of acting against their own interests by aligning with the United States. He said the decision violated Iran’s national security and legal framework.
According to Qalibaf, under Iran’s law on countermeasures against the designation of the Revolutionary Guard Corps, the armed forces of European countries involved in the decision are now considered terrorist groups.
He added that Iran’s parliamentary national security commission would review the possible expulsion of EU military attaches and coordinate further steps with the foreign ministry.
The Revolutionary Guard Corps was established after Iran’s 1979 Islamic Revolution, plays a central role in the country’s military, political, and economic structures.
