Iran has appointed Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi as the new commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as the country faces an ongoing military confrontation involving the United States and Israel.

Vahidi takes over leadership of the powerful military organization at a time when Iran is battling intense attacks that have reportedly killed more than 1,000 people and damaged several cities across the country.

His appointment follows the deaths of senior Iranian commanders during the early stages of the conflict. The previous commander, Mohammad Pakpour, was reportedly killed during the initial phase of the joint Israeli and United States attacks. Pakpour himself had earlier replaced Hossein Salami, who died during a previous round of hostilities in 2025.

Vahidi is regarded as one of the most experienced figures within Iran’s military establishment. A long time member of the Revolutionary Guards, he rose through the ranks in the 1980s and previously headed the elite Quds Force between 1988 and 1997.

He later served in political positions, including as defence minister under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and interior minister during the administration of the late President Ebrahim Raisi.

Analysts say his combination of military and political experience could make him influential in coordinating Iran’s response during the ongoing war.

However, Vahidi’s career has also attracted international controversy. Argentina requested an Interpol red notice against him over alleged involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community centre in Buenos Aires that killed 85 people. Iranian authorities have consistently denied any involvement in the attack.

The United States and the European Union have also imposed sanctions on him over Iran’s crackdown on nationwide protests in 2022 following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody.

Security analysts believe Vahidi’s leadership will play a significant role in determining how Iran manages its military structure during the ongoing conflict, particularly as the country seeks to maintain command coordination after the loss of several senior officials.

Observers say the Revolutionary Guards remain central to the survival and defence strategy of Iran’s political system as the war in the region continues to escalate.
