The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced the postponement of the proposed nationwide voter revalidation exercise until after the 2027 General Election.

The decision was reached on Friday during a meeting between the Commission and Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs), where several electoral matters were reviewed, including preparations aimed at strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s voter register.

According to a statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, the Commission resolved after deliberations that the revalidation exercise would be conducted after the 2027 polls.

The voter revalidation exercise is considered a key part of INEC’s responsibility to maintain an accurate and credible National Register of Voters. The process is designed to verify existing voter records, update personal information, remove duplicate and ineligible entries, and improve the overall reliability of the voter database.

INEC explained that the exercise will also allow registered voters to confirm their personal details and make corrections where necessary.

Despite the postponement, the Commission reiterated its commitment to organizing free, fair, credible, and inclusive elections across the country.
