The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Joash O. Amupitan, SAN, has warned officials of the Commission against breaches of procurement laws, stressing that ignorance will no longer be accepted as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Amupitan gave the warning at the end of a three-day procurement training held in Lagos in collaboration with Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung (KAS), describing the exercise as timely and critical to strengthening the Commission’s operations.
He emphasized that strict compliance with the Procurement Act is essential to maintaining transparency and safeguarding the credibility of the electoral process.
According to him, the training has improved the understanding of procurement procedures among members of the Commission’s Tender Board and is expected to enhance coordination, accountability, and decision-making.
The INEC chairman also disclosed that the Commission’s budget has been approved by the National Assembly, providing a framework for effective procurement planning ahead of the elections.
The workshop brought together national commissioners, directors, and senior staff, with sessions focusing on procurement communication, stakeholder management, and legal compliance.
Experts, including Dr. Steve Ogidan of Successory Nigeria Ltd. and Prof. Adetunji Ogunyemi of Obafemi Awolowo University, delivered presentations highlighting common infractions and legal challenges associated with procurement processes.

Amupitan commended the facilitators for their contributions and lauded participants for their active engagement, noting that the knowledge gained would guide future procurement practices.
He also appreciated the support of the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner for ensuring smooth logistics during the training.

The workshop ended with a renewed commitment by INEC officials to uphold procurement laws and strengthen transparency as a key pillar in delivering credible elections in 2027.
