The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced a 50-day Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise across the 329 wards of Akwa Ibom State, as part of efforts to deepen grassroots participation in the electoral process.
The ward-level registration exercise, which began on Monday, is expected to run for 50 days.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday in Uyo by the INEC Head of Department, Voter Education and Publicity, Bukola Ojeme, who said the initiative was designed to bring voter registration closer to eligible citizens at the grassroots.
Ojeme urged residents who are yet to register or who require voter card services to take advantage of the opportunity, explaining that registration would now take place at INEC Ward Collation Centres across the state.
According to him, two wards in each local government area will be attended to daily, ensuring that all wards are covered within the 50-day period.
“From Monday, February 2, the exercise moved to the wards and will last for 50 days. Eligible citizens can now register at their respective ward collation centres across the 329 wards in the state, with two wards in each LGA serviced daily,” he said.
The INEC spokesperson clarified that during the ward-based exercise, only the commission’s state headquarters registration centre would remain operational, while registration activities at the 31 local government area offices would be temporarily suspended.
He explained that voter enrolment devices currently stationed at local government offices would be rotated among the wards to ensure full coverage, stressing that no ward would be excluded from the exercise.
Ojeme further warned that registration would be conducted strictly at approved ward collation centres, adding that the commission would not tolerate the use of unauthorized locations.
To promote transparency and smooth operations, he disclosed that INEC had approved a rotation timetable for the deployment of enrolment devices and directed Electoral Officers to publicise it widely for the benefit of the public.
