Ibadan and several parts of the South West were thrown into jubilation on Sunday following confirmation that Yoruba nation activist, Chief Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has been removed from the federal government wanted list after high level intervention by prominent traditional rulers.
The development was confirmed by Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, who said all arrangements had been concluded for his principal to return to Nigeria after the monarchs appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu.
Koiki said the royal fathers who led the intervention included the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, among others.
According to him, the Presidency has now cleared Igboho and granted approval for his full reintegration into society, ending years of legal and political uncertainty surrounding the activist.
Sunday Igboho fled Nigeria in July 2021 after security agencies raided his residence in Ibadan over allegations of illegal possession of arms. The operation resulted in the death of some of his associates and the arrest of several others.
He later attempted to travel to Germany through Benin Republic but was that Igboho had expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu, the royal fathers and Yoruba sons and daughters at home and abroad for standing by him throughout his ordeal.
Political observers say the decision may ease long standing tensions in parts of the South West and strengthen confidence in the federal government’s commitment to reconciliation and inclusive governance.
