The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has entered into a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Bar Association Anti-Corruption Committee (NBA-ACC) to deepen the fight against corruption and strengthen ethical standards within Nigeria’s legal profession.
The collaboration was formalized on Thursday with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the ICPC headquarters in Abuja, underscoring a renewed commitment by both institutions to integrity, accountability, and the rule of law.
In a related development, a second MoU was signed between the NBA-ACC and the Anti-Corruption Academy of Nigeria (ACAN), the ICPC’s training and research arm. The agreement is aimed at boosting institutional and human capacity through education, research, and professional development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, ICPC Chairman, Dr. Musa Aliyu, SAN, described the partnership as a proactive response to the urgent need for collective action against corruption.
“Corruption thrives where institutions work in isolation; integrity flourishes where partnerships are forged,” Aliyu said, adding that the collaboration represents a strategic alliance founded on shared values of professionalism, accountability, and service to the Nigerian public.
He explained that the MoU provides a framework for harmonising enforcement and prevention efforts, including capacity building, public enlightenment, and ethical reorientation. According to him, the synergy between the ICPC and the NBA is crucial to strengthening the justice system and restoring public confidence in governance.
Aliyu also highlighted the role of ACAN, stressing that education and skills development are vital to nurturing a new generation of legal practitioners for whom integrity is non-negotiable.
On his part, Chairman of the NBA Anti-Corruption Committee, Professor Babafemi A. Badejo, described the agreements as a significant step toward building stronger institutions and entrenching professional integrity.
He noted that the MoU with the ICPC would enhance collaboration in promoting ethical conduct within the legal profession, improving capacity, increasing public awareness, and advocating policy reforms. He added that the partnership with ACAN would focus on structured anti-corruption training, joint research initiatives, and specialised certification programmes.
