Canada defeated the United States 10 – 7 to win the women’s curling bronze medal at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, as skip Rachel Homan finally secured her first Olympic medal.
Homan celebrated with teammate, Tracy Fleury after US skip, Tabitha Peterson conceded with one stone remaining, sealing Canada’s victory in a tightly contested encounter at the Cortina Curling Olympic Stadium.
The bronze marks Canada’s first medal in the women’s curling event since the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, where Jennifer Jones led her team to gold. Although Homan’s side entered the Games as favourites following back to back world championship titles and three consecutive Grand Slam victories last year, the podium finish ended years of Olympic disappointment for the Canadian skip.
Homan had previously finished sixth at the 2018 Games and failed to reach the semi finals in mixed doubles in 2022. She said she was proud of her team’s resilience and determination throughout the competition.
Saturday’s bronze medal clash remained close in the early stages, with both teams tied at 2 – 2 after four ends. The turning point came in the sixth end when Peterson’s misjudged shot allowed Homan to score three points and take control at 5 – 3. Although the Americans responded to level the match at 5 – 5, Canada capitalized on further errors to build a decisive lead.
The United States had hoped to become the first American women’s team to win an Olympic curling medal, having edged Canada 9 – 8 during the round robin stage.
Attention now shifts to the gold medal match where Sweden, skipped by Anna Hasselborg, will face Switzerland led by Silvana Tirinzoni in the final of the women’s curling competition.
