The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), Kaduna State Council, has denied reports circulating on social media claiming that it plans to embark on a statewide strike.

The clarification was contained in a statement issued on Monday, addressed to the Head of Service of Kaduna State.

The statement was signed by Sani Saulawa on behalf of the union’s chairman.

MHWUN said its attention had been drawn to what it described as unverified reports, alleging an impending industrial action by the union in the state.

“The Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria, Kaduna State Council, has no plan whatsoever to embark on any strike action in the state,” the statement said.

The union commended the Kaduna State Government, under Governor Uba Sani, for what it described as proactive policies and interventions aimed at improving the health sector.

It listed several achievements, including the approval and implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS/CONMESS) for health workers across the state, including personnel under the State Primary Health Care Board.

Other accomplishments highlighted include the promotion and implementation of three years’ outstanding promotions, the upgrading and renovation of 255 health facilities and general hospitals, the supply of essential medical equipment to primary healthcare centres and general hospitals.

The Union also cited the provision of ambulances to general hospitals to strengthen referral services, the ongoing recruitment of 1,800 health professionals under the State Primary Health Care Board.

According to MHWUN, more than 90 per cent of the workforce under the board are members of the union, stressing that there is no justification or intention to disrupt industrial harmony through strike action.

While acknowledging that some demands remain unresolved, the union expressed confidence that the state government was aware of these issues, would address them within the year.

It reaffirmed its commitment to industrial peace, dialogue and cooperation, urged the public to disregard rumours of any planned strike.

The statement followed reports last week that nurses in Kaduna State had issued a warning of a possible statewide strike in 2026 over the alleged failure to conduct promotion exercises.

The warning was contained in a New Year address by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Kaduna State Council, Comrade Ishaku Yakubu, who expressed concern over what he described as neglect of nurses’ career progression by the Ministry of Health and some of its agencies.
