The National Grassroots Movement (NGM) has raised alarm over what it described as a “well-coordinated scheme” by a bloc of northern senators to remove Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.
The allegation comes amid denials from Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele, who dismissed claims of an impeachment plot as unfounded, intended to sow division within the Red Chambers. Bamidele’s statement followed remarks by Senator Orji Kalu (Abia North), who had suggested there were unsuccessful attempts to impeach Akpabio.
In a statement on Monday, NGM National Coordinator Tunde Felix and Publicity Secretary Alhaji Musa Mustapha condemned what they described as a desperate, self-serving power grab against Akpabio, praising his leadership as “steady, nationally balanced, collaborative with the executive.” The group said Akpabio’s approach has helped stabilize governance during a time when Nigeria needed discipline, unity, decisive action.
While acknowledging that leadership changes are constitutionally permissible in the National Assembly, NGM warned against manipulating ethnicity, religion, or sectional alliances to seize power. “The National Assembly must not become a battleground for personal scores or fading political influence,” the statement read.

The group urged Nigerians to remain vigilant, asserting that any attempt to undermine Akpabio for narrow political ambition “will be resisted politically, exposed publicly, rejected morally.”
