Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State recorded a historic milestone on Friday as Governor Umo Eno commissioned a fully completed and equipped general hospital in Ikot Akpankuk, the first functional secondary healthcare facility in the area since its creation in 1976.

The hospital project began in 2009 as a cottage hospital initiative but was abandoned for years until Governor Eno revived, rebuilt, and completed it under his State of Emergency on Healthcare programme.

Addressing a large and jubilant crowd, Governor Eno expressed gratitude for Ukanafun’s consistent support for his administration.

In a goodwill gesture, he announced the approval of funds for the rehabilitation and completion of the Ekefe Road project and directed the Commissioner for Works, Professor Eno Ibanga, to immediately commence mobilisation.

The new general hospital comes with a freshly constructed access road and an internal road network, resolving the long-standing challenge residents faced in accessing medical services in the area.

The Governor also approved the installation of an MRI machine and dialysis units at the new hospital to strengthen kidney care services.

“With this development, residents will no longer need to travel to Uyo for dialysis or related treatments,” the Governor assured.

Chairman of Ukanafun Local Government, Uyo Ukpanah, described the project as a restoration of pride and dignity for the people and thanked Governor Eno for fulfilling his promise and pledged Ukanafun’s unwavering support towards 2027.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Ekem John, recounted how the hospital project remained abandoned after its commencement in 2009 until Governor Eno intervened.

He highlighted broader achievements under the Health Emergency Programme, including the construction of 18 new staff apartments to boost personnel retention and strengthen hospital operations.

Commissioner for Works, Professor Eno Ibanga, provided technical details of the newly completed access road, while the pioneer Medical Superintendent, Dr. Ekerette Sunday Dan, pledged to uphold high medical standards and ensure efficient service delivery at the facility.
