Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has placed an indefinite and immediate ban on all public displays by masquerades across the state, following a disturbing surge in violent attacks on residents by suspected criminals hiding under the guise of cultural performances.

The governor made the declaration during a state function, where he expressed anger over the use of masquerades as a cover for harassment, assault and coordinated attacks in several local government areas.

In a strongly worded pronouncement, Governor Eno said: “By my office as Governor of Akwa Ibom State, I’m issuing an order. Anyone caught will be arrested and tried. They have been using it to cause trouble in some local government areas. I’m now as Chief Security Officer of the state, directing the Commissioner of Police and all security heads to arrest and prosecute anyone caught.”

The governor condemned what he described as the terrorisation of peaceful citizens under the pretense of masquerade activities, insisting that public safety must override every cultural expression.

“Let’s stop terrorising people. Let people have peace. All those I see when we’re driving… please, let it be said it is hereby banned. No more.”
