Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has approved the release of an additional N2.3 billion for the payment of gratuities, bringing the total amount disbursed by his administration to nearly N80 billion.
The latest release is part of the governor’s ongoing effort to offset the N111 billion backlog of gratuities and other emoluments inherited on assumption of office in May 2023.
Governor Eno had reiterated his commitment to clearing the backlog during the presentation of the 2026 Budget, assuring retirees and workers that his administration would continue to prioritise their welfare.
Since taking office on May 29, 2023, the governor has consistently released funds to reduce the outstanding liabilities, fulfilling a campaign promise made in 2023 to regularly pay down the arrears.
The payment of gratuities aligns with a central pillar of the administration’s social investment drive, which emphasises compassionate governance and support for vulnerable groups.
Nearly three years into his tenure, the government has constructed and handed over 335 ARISE Compassionate Homes to beneficiaries, with a target of delivering 500 units within the first term.
Additionally, 50 elderly persons drawn rotationally from the state’s 369 wards receive N50,000 monthly support under the ARISE Elderly Care Initiative, while over 10,000 vulnerable citizens have been enrolled in the ARISE Medical Insurance Scheme at no cost.
The administration maintains that these social interventions are being executed alongside major projects across tourism, aviation, agriculture, infrastructure, healthcare, education, and power.
With the latest disbursement, the state government says it remains committed to fully liquidating the inherited gratuities backlog.
