United States President Donald Trump is receiving overwhelming backing from Republican lawmakers following coordinated US-Israeli strikes on Iran that reportedly killed Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, despite the presence of an anti-war wing within his political base.

The military operation, carried out on Saturday, has triggered sharp partisan divisions in Washington, with Republican leaders largely praising the President’s decision while Democratic lawmakers question both the legality and long-term consequences of the action.

House Speaker Mike Johnson said Iran was “facing the severe consequences of its evil actions,” insisting that the Trump administration had exhausted diplomatic options before launching the assault.

Senator Chuck Grassley echoed his stance, writing on social media that Iran had been given “plenty of negotiable opportunity.”

Hawkish voices within the party were even more forceful. Senator Lindsey Graham described the strikes as a powerful global signal, suggesting they would resonate with rivals such as Russia and China. Congressman Randy Fine declared full support for the president, while other Republicans hailed the killing of Khamenei as a decisive blow against Tehran.

Yet dissent, though limited, has not been entirely absent. Congressman Tom Massie publicly opposed the war, stating, “This is not ‘America First.’” He pledged to pursue legislation aimed at limiting the President’s authority to escalate military action without congressional approval.

Former Trump ally, Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized the move, questioning whether war with Iran advances American domestic interests.

Across the aisle, Democrats focused heavily on constitutional concerns. House Minority Leader, Hakeem Jeffries acknowledged Khamenei’s controversial legacy but warned that the administration had failed to articulate a clear post-strike strategy to prevent deeper military entanglement.

Senator Tim Kaine argued that Congress, not the President holds the power to declare war, cast doubt on claims that Iran posed an imminent threat to the United States.

However, some Democrats broke ranks. Senator John Fetterman praised the strikes without reservation, commending the US military and expressing solidarity with Israel.

The reaction highlights a complex political landscape. While the “MAGA” movement includes influential non-interventionist voices. Republican lawmakers have largely closed ranks behind Trump. For now, foreign policy hawks appear to hold sway, even as debates over war powers and the risk of prolonged conflict loom over Capitol Hill.

With tensions escalating in the Middle East and Tehran vowing retaliation, Washington now faces a pivotal moment – one that could redefine both US foreign policy and the political balance within the Republican Party.
