Gombe State High Court has sentenced five men to various prison terms for offences related to the unlawful exhumation of a corpse at a graveyard in Kwami Local Government Area.

Justice Abdulsalam Mohammed of Court 8 delivered the judgment on Friday after the defendants pleaded guilty to some of the charges brought against them by the prosecution.

The convicts — Mohammed Isah (alias Chindo), Kawuni Sarki, Manu Saleh, Umar Jibrin (alias Daddy) and Adamu Nasiru, all from Gadam village were arraigned alongside a sixth defendant, Abdullahi Umar Dauda, over their alleged involvement in the incident.

State counsel, Ahmed Yakubu told the court that the defendants were facing a 10-count charge, including conspiracy, attempt to commit felony, causing indignity to a corpse, unlawful entry into a graveyard, theft, destruction of public property, membership of an unlawful society and possession of unlawful charms.

The prosecution said the offences were committed on September 11, 2025, when the defendants allegedly conspired with two other suspects still at large to unlawfully exhume a body from the Gadam Muslim cemetery.

They were also accused of attempting to tamper with another grave on the same day.

Following their guilty plea on some counts, the prosecution urged the court to summarily try and convict them in line with provisions of the Gombe State Administration of Criminal Justice Law.

In his judgment, Justice Mohammed sentenced the five convicts to six months imprisonment on one count, with additional one-year terms on other counts.

Three of the defendants: Isah, Sarki and Nasiru were further sentenced to two years each for theft.

The court ordered that the sentences run consecutively, resulting in total jail terms of five years for Isah, four years and six months for Nasiru, and two years and six months each for Saleh and Jibrin.

Justice Mohammed also directed that trial should continue on the remaining counts, and adjourned the matter to April 16, 2026, for further hearing.
