President John Mahama of Ghana has recalled the country’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Baba Ahmed, following allegations linking him to electoral malpractices during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries for the Ayawaso East Constituency.

A statement issued by the Ghanaian Presidency on Saturday in Accra said the recall was necessitated by Ahmed’s alleged involvement in electoral malpractice while serving as a public officer.

According to the statement, the decision takes immediate effect, aimed at preventing any perception of impropriety or conflict with the Government’s Code of Conduct for Political Appointees.

It noted that Ahmed, who was an aspirant in the parliamentary primaries, could no longer remain in office under the prevailing circumstances, even though allegations of vote-buying were reportedly levelled against several aspirants who took part in the exercise.

The recall followed allegations of voter inducement during the NDC parliamentary primaries held on Saturday in the Ayawaso East Constituency.

The Presidency stressed that the action was taken without prejudice to ongoing internal party investigations and processes.

“Without prejudice to the ongoing internal party processes, and strictly in view of the standards of conduct expected of public officers, the President considers it necessary to act decisively to preserve the integrity of public office,” the statement said.

It added that the Minister of Foreign Affairs has been directed to take all necessary administrative and diplomatic steps to give effect to the recall.

“The recall takes effect immediately,” the statement concluded.
