France is attempting to balance criticism, caution as the war involving United States, Israel and Iran continues to escalate across the Middle East.

French President, Emmanuel Macron has questioned the legality of the military assault on Iran while also suggesting that Tehran bears significant responsibility for the conflict.

Analysts say Paris is pursuing a careful diplomatic approach which condemns the escalation but stops short of directly confronting Washington and Tel Aviv.

Laure Foucher, a researcher at the Foundation for Strategic Research in Paris, said the French position reflects concern that the operation was conducted outside the framework of international law while still holding Iran accountable for failing to reach compromises in earlier negotiations.

Macron has also warned that the conflict could widen and threaten regional stability, particularly among Gulf states where France maintains defence partnerships.

In response to the rising tensions, France has deployed about ten naval vessels to strategic areas including the Eastern Mediterranean, the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz to protect commercial shipping routes and French citizens living in the region.

According to French officials, the mission is designed to escort vessels and maintain maritime security rather than conduct offensive operations.

France is also closely watching developments in Lebanon, where cross border strikes between Israel and the Iran backed group – Hezbollah have raised fears of a wider regional war.

Macron has called for an immediate truce and urged international cooperation to protect global shipping lanes that are vital to the world economy.

Public opinion in France remains divided, with some citizens criticizing the US and Israeli military campaign, while others believe the pressure could weaken Iran’s leadership.

Within the Iranian diaspora community in France, views are also split, reflecting broader debates over whether external military intervention could influence political change in Iran or worsen instability in the region.
