Israeli police have arrested four young foreign residents in connection with the vandalism and destruction of headstones at a cemetery near Jerusalem’s Old City.
According to police authorities, the suspects aged between 18 and 20 were apprehended on Sunday night following reports of damage to several graves and headstones within the historic burial site.
The incident triggered an immediate security response due to the religious and cultural sensitivity of the location.
Police confirmed that the suspects were taken into custody for questioning and are scheduled to be brought before a court on Monday for a remand hearing.
In a statement, the Israel Police strongly condemned the act, describing the desecration of graves as a serious offense.
Authorities emphasized that vandalism of holy places would not be tolerated, vowed firm and uncompromising enforcement against anyone who undermines public order and communal coexistence in the city.
The affected cemetery is located close to Jerusalem’s Old City, an area of profound religious significance to multiple faiths, frequently under heightened security surveillance.
Investigations into the motive behind the vandalism are ongoing, while police said additional security measures remain in place to prevent further incidents.
