Former British Ambassador, Peter Mandelson has been arrested in London as part of an investigation into alleged “misconduct in public office” linked to his relationship with convicted US sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson, 72, a longtime Labour Party figure and former minister under Prime Minister Gordon Brown, was taken from his home by authorities for questioning. The arrest follows recently released emails by the US Department of Justice that revealed a closer connection between Mandelson and Epstein, than previously known.
The emails suggest Mandelson shared information with Epstein during his ministerial tenure. He resigned from Parliament’s upper chamber, stepped down from the Labour Party earlier this year, expressing “deep regret” over his association with Epstein.
His arrest comes days after the UK’s Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, King Charles III’s younger brother, was also detained as part of a related probe. The UK government is now considering legislation to remove Mountbatten-Windsor from the royal line of succession.
Analysts say the developments have added significant political pressure on Prime Minister Keir Starmer, intensifying the fallout from the Epstein scandal in Britain.
