A fire broke out at Jos Terminus Market in Plateau State on Saturday night, destroying over 10 shops despite swift intervention from emergency teams, reports say. The blaze began around 10:00p.m., sending thick smoke into the night sky as it spread across sections of the market, damaging goods and property.

Eyewitness Silas Lawrenzo commended the rapid response of firefighters and emergency personnel from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Plateau State Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Fire Service, and the Plateau State Fire Service, saying their prompt action prevented further destruction.

Fortunately, no casualties were reported. However, many businesses and inventories were affected, with the full extent of losses yet to be determined. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Attempts to reach the General Manager of Jos Main Market, Mangnan Yusuf Wamyil, for comments were unsuccessful.

This incident follows a similar fire earlier in the week at the Plateau State College of Health Technology in Zawan, Jos South, which destroyed the medical laboratory section, leaving students in distress.

The recurrence of such fires highlights the need for enhanced safety measures, fire prevention strategies, and infrastructure improvements within Plateau State’s markets to protect both lives and livelihoods.
