Fire outbreak at a residential building on Bola Street, Oyingbo, Lagos State, has claimed the life of a 103-year-old woman and destroyed several household properties.

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday by its Permanent Secretary, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, noting that the agency received a distress call at about 12:00p.m.

According to him, emergency responders arrived at the scene at 12:13 p.m. to find a residential bungalow with two shops attached already engulfed in flames.

“The fire reportedly started in one of the rooms before spreading to other parts of the building. However, the cause of the fire had yet to be ascertained as of the time of filing this report,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.

He disclosed that despite swift emergency response measures, the centenarian woman, whose identity was withheld, lost her life in the incident.

The Permanent Secretary added that the fire affected eight rooms, a mini flat, six shops, and several household properties within the compound.

“The recovered body has been handed over to the family for necessary action. The fire has been completely extinguished, while dampening, rescue, and recovery operations have been concluded,” he stated.

Oke-Osanyintolu explained that the agency’s Light Rescue Team and Fire Unit, working in collaboration with other emergency responders, successfully curtailed and contained the blaze, preventing it from spreading to adjoining buildings.
