The Federal Government has taken another step to address the persistent challenge of gas supply to power generation plants with the inauguration of a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee.

This was disclosed in a statement by the Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations to the Minister of Power, Bolaji Tunji. According to the statement, gas-fired plants, which account for about 80 percent of Nigeria’s electricity generation, continue to face significant setbacks due to supply disruptions, pipeline vandalism, mounting debts owed to gas producers, and weak coordination within the sector.

Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, described the initiative as a decisive and strategic move aimed at resolving one of the most critical constraints in Nigeria’s electricity supply industry.

Adelabu noted that the committee will serve as a coordination platform to monitor developments and drive the resolution of key issues affecting gas supply to power plants.

Among its responsibilities, the committee will oversee efforts to repair damaged gas pipelines, address the settlement of outstanding debts owed to gas suppliers, and tackle other operational barriers hindering the steady supply of gas to generation companies.

The Minister charged members of the committee to provide actionable recommendations, particularly on mechanisms that will guarantee payment for gas supplies and ensure the long-term sustainability of the gas-to-power value chain.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the committee’s work will strengthen collaboration among stakeholders, help improve the reliability of power generation across the country.
