The Controller of the FCT Fire Service, Engr. Adebayo Amiola Zacchaeus, has appealed for more attention to be given to developing fire stations in key Abuja districts such as Wuse, Guzape, Mpape, Jikwoyi, Orozo, Karshi, Karsana, Idu, Karimo, and Lugbe, among others.
Adebayo noted that each of the locations is critical to the safety network of the ever-growing Nigeria’s capital city.
Making the appeal yesterday, during a press conference on the occasion of its 23rd anniversary, said it is also important to note that the Fire Service all over the world comprises men and women
of diverse professional backgrounds, and the FCT Fire Service is no exception.
He added that the modern fire service, beyond extinguishing fires, is a hub of technical, administrative, and strategic expertise.
According to him,” As we celebrate our anniversary, we must also be mindful that the dry season is upon us-a period typically marked by high temperatures, low humidity, dry vegetation, dusty winds, and increased human activity such as bush burning and careless waste disposal. These conditions make fire outbreaks more frequent and more severe.
“We must speak frankly about the challenges confronting us. One of our major concerns is the overuse and aging of our firefighting trucks. Many of our trucks have been in service far beyond their optimal lifespan, the cost of keeping them functional through constant maintenance continues to rise, and this is no longer economical.
“Equally pressing is the issue of manpower shortage. The Federal Capital Territory has expanded rapidly in recent years, with many new districts emerging.
“However, our personnel strength and resources have not grown in proportion to this expansion. Every district should ideally have a functional fire station for quick response to emergencies. Unfortunately, several areas still lack such a presence.”
Furthermore, he saluted officers and men of the FCT Fire Service–both serving and retired-for their steadfast dedication to duty, professionalism, and sacrifice.
He also honoured the souls of the Service’s departed heroes who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
“We have come this far, stronger and more determined to serve our country faithfully.
“To our stakeholders and friends of the Service including Ministries, Departments, and Agencies of the FCTA, our partners in the private sector, community leaders, and indeed residents of the FCT thank you for your immense contributions and collaboration over the years. Your support remains the lifeblood of our collective progress”, he stressed.
