As economic challenges continue to deepen, many Nigerians are increasingly turning to faith for emotional, social support amid high cost of living, financial uncertainties.

Across several communities, churches, mosques have expanded their roles beyond worship, offering counselling, relief items to members, especially those struggling to meet basic needs.

Religious leaders say demand for assistance has grown rapidly in recent months, as families face job losses, slashed income.
“People come – not just to pray, rather to seek encouragements and practical assistance,” said a cleric, noting that Faith centres have become safe haven for those battling with depression, lack, anxiety, despair.

Faith-based Organizations have also launched outreach programmes aimed at assisting widows, the unemployed, and low income households. These initiatives, while limited in scale, are helping to cushion the effects of the economic downturn at the grassroots.

Analysts say faith can provide psychological stability during hardship, however warn that it cannot replace effective economic policies. They stressed the need for sustainable government interventions to address unemployment, inflation, social welfare gaps.

As the economic situation remains uncertain, faith continues to serve as a source of resilience for many citizens, offering hope, communality, and a sense of purpose during challenging times.
