A former Chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Force, Abdulrasheed Maina, has been hospitalized in Abuja after slumping while attempting to access his office on Tuesday.
The incident was confirmed in a statement issued on Wednesday by his media assistant, Emmanuel Ekwe, who said Maina collapsed following complications arising from an untreated knee injury.
According to the statement, the injury caused Maina to lose his balance and fall, during which he reportedly hit his head on a staircase.
“Dr Abdulrasheed Maina, former Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team, slumped on the evening of Tuesday, February 3, 2026, while attempting to access his office premises,” Ekwe said.
“The incident followed complications from an untreated knee injury, which caused him to lose balance and fall, resulting in his head hitting the staircase. Medical personnel present promptly administered first aid before rushing him to a private hospital in Abuja for urgent medical attention.”
Ekwe disclosed that Maina is currently receiving intensive medical care and remains under close observation, adding that doctors are monitoring his condition.
He said preliminary medical assessment indicated that an air ambulance medical evacuation may be considered if his condition does not stabilise within a short period.
“Dr Maina is currently receiving intensive medical care and remains under observation. His family and medical team continue to monitor his progress closely,” the statement added.
The family has appealed to the public for prayers, understanding and respect for privacy during what it described as a critical time, promising to provide updates as developments unfold.
Maina is widely known for his controversial tenure as head of the Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms and the high-profile corruption case that followed.
In November 2021, a Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him of money laundering involving N2.1 billion in pension funds and sentenced him to eight years’ imprisonment. His conviction was upheld by the Court of Appeal in May 2023, which also affirmed the forfeiture of assets linked to the case.
Despite the sentence, Maina was released from the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja on February 25, 2025.
The Nigerian Correctional Service explained at the time that his release was in line with statutory remission for good conduct, with his sentence calculated from his initial arrest in October 2019.
