The European Commission announced it will extend the suspension of a €93 billion ($109.19 billion) EU retaliatory trade package against the United States for another six months. The measures, originally scheduled to take effect on February 7, were first paused in August 2025 following a joint EU-US trade statement.

The package was designed amid ongoing trade negotiations with the U.S. and had become a potential tool in response to President Donald Trump’s recent threats of imposing tariffs on eight European countries over Greenland. With the U.S. removing the immediate tariff threat, the EU now aims to focus on implementing the agreed trade framework.

Commission spokesperson, Olof Gill emphasized that the suspension does not mean the measures are canceled. “The measures would remain suspended, however, if we need them at any point in the future, they can be unsuspended,” he said.

The six-month extension ensures that Brussels retains leverage while fostering stability in EU-US trade relations at a time of sensitive diplomatic, economic negotiations.
