European Union antitrust regulators are set to decide by February 10 whether to approve Alphabet’s proposed 32 billion dollar acquisition of cybersecurity firm Wiz, according to a filing on the European Commission’s website.
The deal, Alphabet’s largest ever, was announced in March last year as Google moves to strengthen its cybersecurity capabilities and sharpen competition in the cloud computing market against rivals such as Amazon and Microsoft.
The European Commission, which serves as the EU’s competition watchdog, can approve the transaction with or without conditions during its preliminary review, or open an in depth investigation if it raises serious competition concerns.
Technology sector acquisitions have faced increased regulatory scrutiny in recent years amid concerns that major firms could further entrench their market dominance.
The acquisition already received regulatory approval in the United States in November last year.
