Eight suspected phone snatchers arrested along the Mile 2 pedestrian bridge in Lagos have been sentenced to six months in prison each, following a swift trial at the Magistrate Court, Bolade, Oshodi.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, disclosed this on Thursday through a statement shared on his official X handle.

Wahab explained that the culprits were apprehended during an early morning operation by officers of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC).

Those convicted include Anthony Osinachi (21), Victor Onuoha (45), Rowland Ede (25), Daniel Chisom (24), Emmanuel Chukwu (35), Ogbonnaya Uchechi (18), Godday Eke (28), and Benjamin G. (30).

According to the Commissioner, the suspects pleaded guilty to the charges and were handed six-month jail terms after being arraigned.

“The eight miscreants arrested earlier today for snatching phones on the pedestrian bridge at Mile 2 were arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi. They pleaded guilty and were sentenced to six months’ imprisonment,” Wahab stated.

He applauded the prompt response of LAGESC operatives, emphasizing that the move reflects the government’s commitment to sanitizing public spaces and ensuring the safety of residents.

Wahab further urged Lagosians to stay alert and promptly report suspicious activities or criminal behavior to law enforcement agencies.

The action aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s ongoing zero-tolerance drive against environmental violations, illegal occupation of public facilities, and the rising tide of criminal activities in certain parts of the state.

It would be recalled that in October, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) apprehended six suspected members of a “one-chance” gang operating under the Ijora Bridge corridor. The arrests were made during a joint operation targeting illegal garages, makeshift shanties, and criminal hideouts across Apapa Road, Costain, and the Ijora under-bridge area.
