The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has handed over a bank draft of ₦42.5 million to a 70-year-old widow and retiree, Mrs. Margret Taye Odofin, who was defrauded by her former account and investment officer, Mrs. Kehinde Olawale Yusuf, a staff of one of the new generation banks.
The presentation, which took place on Thursday, November 2025, at the Kaduna Zonal Directorate of the Commission, was conducted by the Acting Director, Bawa Kaltungo, on behalf of EFCC’s Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede.
According to details shared on the EFCC’s official Facebook page, the case began in December 2024 when Mrs. Odofin petitioned the Commission, alleging that her investment officer, Mrs. Yusuf, had lured her into a fraudulent investment scheme between November and December 2020. The banker reportedly promised her a quarterly return of ₦1.7 million but instead diverted ₦47 million from her account into various bank accounts without authorization.
Following the fraudulent transactions, Mrs. Yusuf fled to the United Kingdom. However, the EFCC’s investigations led to the tracing and recovery of part of the stolen funds, amounting to ₦42.5 million, which has now been returned to the victim.
An emotional Mrs. Odofin, who could barely hold back tears of joy, expressed deep gratitude to the EFCC and its leadership for restoring her hope and hard-earned savings.
“I cannot believe this. When we reported the case in the United Kingdom where Mrs. Yusuf absconded after defrauding me, they advised that we contact the EFCC in Nigeria since the crime was committed here. Today, I’m singing to the glory of God because He has used the EFCC to wipe away my tears. I have waited for years to get my money back,” she said.
“I want to thank Mr. Ola Olukoyede for the excellent job he is doing. I will campaign for the EFCC anywhere because today they have given me every reason to believe and testify that the Commission is truly working. I pray for you all to continue to succeed,” she added.
Speaking during the handover, Kaltungo reaffirmed the EFCC’s commitment under Olukoyede’s leadership to ensuring justice for victims of financial crimes.
“We sincerely appreciate your trust in the Commission to recover your hard-earned money. We are glad to have restored your confidence in our professionalism and capacity to address fraudulent activities within our mandate,” he stated.
