The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has described Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed’s claims that the agency is
being used by political opponents to target him as “wild and far-fetched.”
In a statement, the EFCC said the allegations suggesting the Commission is influenced by Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, are mischievous, condemnable, emphasizing that the agency is an independent, non-partisan body tasked with fighting economic and financial crimes.
“It is derogatory for Governor Mohammed to ascribe the Commission’s activities in Bauchi State to the influence of Mr. Wike.
No political office holder can influence EFCC investigations,” the statement read.
The EFCC further noted that Governor Mohammed was already facing trial for money laundering, prior to assuming office, and that the constitutional immunity provided by his governorship temporarily halted the proceedings.
The Commission confirmed that in the current case, charges have already been filed against some Bauchi State officials, that members of the public can access court documents to assess the validity of the investigation.
The EFCC added that Governor Mohammed, as the approving authority in Bauchi State, is mentioned in the charges where relevant.
Reacting to claims linking the Commission’s actions to terrorism financing, the EFCC said such assertions are “like clutching at straws”, stressing that the agency acts in accordance with extant laws and its mandate to uphold public accountability.
The statement also criticized the double standards of politicians, noting that opposition figures often cry persecution when targeted, while ruling party members face similar scrutiny without complaint.
The EFCC urged Governor Mohammed to focus on governance in Bauchi State, allow the agency to continue cleaning the nation’s financial space.
