The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has uncovered and shut down a suspected cybercrime training centre, popularly referred to as a “Yahoo academy,” in the Federal Capital Territory, arresting 31 individuals linked to the operation.
According to the anti-graft agency, the arrests were made on Thursday, April 9, 2026, during a sting operation carried out at Becki Estate in Karu, Abuja. Among those apprehended were two alleged masterminds believed to be running the operation, along with several trainees receiving instruction in internet fraud.

During the raid, EFCC operatives recovered multiple items believed to have been used in the illegal activities, including mobile phones, 18 laptop computers, and other electronic devices.
Preliminary investigations by the commission indicate that some of the recruits were brought from Benue State after being promised legitimate employment opportunities. However, upon arrival at the facility, they were reportedly provided with phones, computers, and specialized software as part of a training program designed to teach cyber-fraud techniques.
The EFCC further revealed that the trainees were allegedly confined within the premises of the facility. Their movements were strictly limited, and their personal mobile phones were reportedly confiscated, preventing communication with people outside the compound.
Investigators also alleged that harsh disciplinary measures were imposed on trainees who failed to comply with instructions, including physical punishment.

The anti-corruption agency stated that all suspects remain in custody and will face prosecution once investigations are completed.
