Edo State Government has declared a Lassa Fever outbreak following the death of six persons and confirmation of 28 cases across the state.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, made the announcement on Friday while briefing journalists, describing the situation as a serious public health concern requiring urgent and coordinated action.

He said the recent increase in infections, particularly in Etsako West and Esan West Local Government Areas, indicated sustained community transmission of the disease.

“Following a careful epidemiological review and risk assessment by the Edo State Ministry of Health, I hereby formally declare a Lassa Fever outbreak in Edo State. As of today, Edo State has recorded 28 laboratory-confirmed cases of Lassa Fever with six reported deaths,” Oshiomhole stated.

He noted that the rising number of cases necessitated intensified intervention, collaboration among stakeholders to contain the spread of the disease.

In response, the Commissioner announced the activation of all operational pillars of the Edo State Public Health Emergency Operations Centre, which will coordinate response efforts under the leadership of the Director of Public Health.

He added that the state had already taken proactive measures, including the donation of Lassa Fever treatment packs to the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), one of the country’s foremost centres for managing the disease.

Oshiomhole assured residents that the government remained vigilant and fully committed to safeguarding public health, adding that daily situation reports would be monitored closely to guide response strategies.

He called on residents to remain calm, adhere strictly to public health guidelines, and support efforts aimed at containing the outbreak.
