The Department of State Services, DSS, has arraigned former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and his son before a Federal High Court on a five count charge bordering on terrorism financing, illegal possession of firearms.
The defendants were brought before the court by operatives of the DSS following investigations which allegedly linked them to the funding of terrorist activities and unlawful possession of prohibited firearms.
According to the charge sheet, the DSS accused Malami and his son of conspiring to provide financial support to groups designated as terrorist organizations, an offence said to be contrary to relevant provisions of Nigeria’s Terrorism Prevention Act. They were also alleged to have unlawfully possessed firearms without valid authorization.
When the charges were read in court, both defendants pleaded not guilty to all counts.
Following their pleas, counsel to the DSS prayed the court to fix a date for trial and order that the defendants be remanded pending the determination of the case. Defence counsel opposed the application and urged the court to admit the defendants to bail, arguing that they would make themselves available for trial.
The court thereafter adjourned the matter to a later date for the hearing of bail applications and commencement of trial.
