Denmark has warned it is facing a fateful, historic moment after US President, Donald Trump threatened that the United States could take control of Greenland, a move Danish leaders say could undermine the foundations of the Western alliance.

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said US threats against a close ally risk breaking the core principles of NATO, stressing that trust and collective security are the pillars holding the alliance together.

Frederiksen warned that if the United States turns its back on the Western alliance, the consequences would be profound, saying such a shift would mark a breaking point for transatlantic cooperation.

She declined to outline any specific contingency plans should the United States attempt to use force, noting that Denmark now stands at a historic crossroads that demands careful but firm leadership.

The Danish prime minister said upcoming talks involving Denmark, the United States and Greenland would focus on defending the position and unity of the Danish realm, while reaffirming respect for international law and sovereignty.

Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, holds strategic importance in the Arctic, an area of growing geopolitical competition as global powers seek influence over security routes and natural resources.

Frederiksen emphasized that Denmark remains committed to dialogue but will not compromise on its sovereignty or the principles underpinning NATO and international cooperation.
