The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised alarm over what it described as growing threats to Nigeria’s democracy, warning the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and other national institutions to avoid actions that could undermine the country’s democratic process.
In a press statement issued on April 2, 2026, signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said recent political developments suggest attempts to manipulate the political space against opposition parties.
The party alleged that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is determined to win the next presidential election “at all costs,” warning that such a pursuit could derail democracy and destabilize the country.
The PDP also criticized what it described as the growing involvement of national institutions in political matters. According to the party, institutions such as the judiciary, INEC and other bodies must remain neutral and avoid actions that may be perceived as favouring the ruling party.
The statement specifically referenced INEC’s recent press statement derecognizing the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) based on its interpretation of a Court of Appeal judgment and other pending court cases.
The party expressed concern that INEC’s interpretation of political party matters often appears to favour the ruling party, warning that such actions could create the impression of a predetermined election outcome.
The opposition party also questioned the timing of recent political party monitoring activities published by INEC, noting that there are speculations these could lead to the deregistration of some opposition parties, which it said would further weaken Nigeria’s democracy.

The PDP therefore called on national institutions, particularly INEC, to resist partisan pressures and place the interests of the country and democracy above political considerations.
“This is a critical moment in our democratic journey,” the party said, urging institutions and political actors to adopt a “country-first” approach to protect Nigeria’s democratic system.

The party called on all stakeholders to act responsibly to ensure the survival of Nigeria’s democracy.
