Authorities in Cuba have confirmed a fifth death following a shootout between Cuban security forces and a speedboat registered in the Florida that allegedly attempted to enter the island’s waters last month.
The Cuban Ministry of Interior said Roberto Alvarez Avila died on March 4 from injuries sustained during the confrontation.
According to the authorities, Cuban soldiers encountered a speedboat carrying 10 individuals on February 26 as the vessel approached the country’s northern coast.
Officials said the occupants of the boat opened fire on the troops, prompting a response from the security forces.
Cuban authorities stated that the passengers were armed Cuban nationals living in the United States who were attempting to infiltrate the country and carry out acts of terrorism.
Four people were initially killed during the exchange of gunfire, while six others were wounded and taken into custody. The latest death brings the total number of fatalities to five.
Government officials said the injured detainees are receiving medical treatment while investigations into the incident continue.
Authorities also said items recovered from the boat included high powered weapons, more than 12,800 rounds of ammunition and several pistols.
Cuban prosecutors have filed terrorism charges against six suspects who were on board the vessel.
The confrontation reportedly occurred about 1.6 kilometres off the coast near Cayo Falcones.
Officials said further investigations are underway to determine whether other individuals based in the United States were involved in the alleged operation.
