Cross River State chapter of the Magistrates’ Association of Nigeria (MAN) has announced plans to resume its indefinite strike action on February 9, citing the state government’s failure to address its outstanding demands.

The decision was contained in a letter dated February 2, issued in Calabar on Tuesday, signed by the Association’s Chairman, Godwin Onah, and Secretary, Solomon Abuo.

According to the letter, the resolution to resume the suspended strike was reached at the association’s general meeting held on January 30, following what it described as the government’s failure to honour earlier commitments.

The magistrates recalled that the strike was suspended after the personal intervention of the state Governor in November 2024, during which assurances were given that their demands would be addressed.

While acknowledging the government’s implementation of the promotion and regularization of magistrates with attendant financial benefits, the Association lamented the lack of progress on other critical demands, noting that the situation has continued to cause hardship and disaffection among its members.

“In view of the foregoing, we have resolved to resume the suspended indefinite strike action at the expiration of seven days from today. For the avoidance of doubt, the said indefinite strike action shall be resumed on February 9 without further notice,” the association stated.

The magistrates appealed to the state government to act swiftly to avert the looming industrial action.

Key demands of the association include a 50 per cent increase in remuneration, provision of official vehicles and accommodation, renovation of court facilities, and the payment of salary arrears dating back to 2019.

They also expressed dissatisfaction with the payment of ₦15,000 as monthly impress allowance, compared to ₦200,000 to ₦250,000 reportedly paid to magistrates in neighbouring states.

The association further called for the immediate implementation of promotions and regularisation across all cadres, alongside the payment of all accrued financial entitlements.
