The United States Central Intelligence Agency has released a new Chinese-language recruitment video aimed at members of China’s military, urging them to provide intelligence to Washington.
The video, published on YouTube on Thursday, gives detailed instructions on how interested individuals can securely contact the agency using the encrypted Tor Browser. It is the latest in a series of online campaigns directed at citizens of China and Russia.
In the nearly two-minute clip, a fictional Chinese military officer is portrayed as becoming increasingly disillusioned with his country’s leadership, accusing them of protecting “only their own selfish interests.”
The character is shown reflecting on his family’s future, saying he cannot “allow these madmen to shape my daughter’s future world.” The narrative also references ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, noting that true victory comes from triumphing without fighting.
In the closing scenes, the officer is seen accessing a computer in a secluded location to contact the CIA, describing his action as a way of fighting for his family and nation. The video ends with instructions on downloading the Tor Browser to reach the agency.
The text accompanying the video asks whether viewers have information about high-ranking Chinese leaders or work in fields such as the military, intelligence, diplomacy, science, or advanced technology.
While Beijing had not issued an immediate response to the latest video as of press time, Chinese authorities have previously described similar US intelligence recruitment efforts as malicious attempts to lure Chinese personnel.
The development comes years after China dismantled a US spying network between 2010 and 2012, an operation that reportedly led to the death or imprisonment of several individuals linked to the intelligence ring.
