China’s Minister of Emergency Management, Wang Xiangxi, is under investigation for suspected “serious violations of discipline and law,” the country’s anti corruption watchdog said on Saturday, as Beijing continues its crackdown on high level officials.

The Central Commission for Discipline Inspection announced the probe in a brief statement without providing details. It is considered unusual for a serving minister to be investigated while still in office.

Wang, who also serves as a Communist Party secretary, took office in July 2022 after previously heading the state owned power generator National Energy Investment Corporation. He is 63.

The investigation comes amid President Xi Jinping’s long running anti corruption campaign. Authorities have intensified scrutiny of senior officials, with dozens of high ranking figures placed under investigation in the past year.

Last week, China’s defence ministry said it was probing the country’s top general, Zhang Youxia, in another rare move involving a senior official. President Xi has repeatedly said the fight against corruption is a battle China must not lose.

Wang was last seen publicly earlier this week when he attended a routine internal meeting at the Ministry of Emergency Management, according to an official release.

In a separate announcement, the corruption watchdog also said it had opened an investigation into Sun Shaocheng, a former party secretary of the Inner Mongolia autonomous region.
