China has expressed its support for Somalia in safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity, following the postponement of a planned diplomatic visit. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed the message during a phone call with his Somali counterpart on Sunday, according to a statement from China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the call, Wang emphasized China’s opposition to any “collusion” between Somaliland and Taiwan authorities in attempts to seek independence, reaffirming Beijing’s stance on Somalia’s territorial unity.
The Somali visit was originally scheduled as part of Wang’s annual New Year tour of Africa, which also includes Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Lesotho. The Chinese embassy said the visit was postponed due to a “schedule change.”
Analysts say the phone call underscores China’s continued strategic engagement in East Africa, focusing on political stability, reinforcing its influence in the region while, maintaining its position on territorial disputes.
