China has accused the United States of abusing its Section 301 trade law after Washington launched a new investigation into alleged forced labour practices involving dozens of economies.
China’s Ministry of Commerce said on Monday that it had lodged formal complaints with the US government, describing the move as unfair and discriminatory.
The Office of the US Trade Representative last week announced a second round of Section 301 investigations into about 60 economies over what it described as failure to tackle forced labour in supply chains.
Beijing criticized the probe, saying it was an attempt to create trade barriers and impose unilateral measures that undermine international trade rules.
A spokesperson for the Chinese commerce ministry said the United States was using the investigation process to override global trade principles and pursue protectionist policies.
China urged Washington to “correct its wrong practices” and resolve the issue through dialogue and equal consultation.
The ministry also said it would closely monitor the progress of the investigation and take necessary steps to protect China’s legitimate rights and interests.
