At least 25 members of Mexico’s National Guard have been killed following violent clashes triggered by the killing of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, widely known as El Mencho.

Mexican President, Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed that calm was gradually being restored after security forces carried out a major operation that led to the death of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel leader.

Speaking at a press conference, Security Secretary, Omar Garcia Harfuch disclosed that the 25 National Guard personnel were killed in six separate confrontations with armed criminal groups in Jalisco state. He added that 30 suspected criminals were also killed in the clashes, while four others died during related violence in Michoacan.

The killing of El Mencho sparked reprisal attacks across several states, with criminal groups erecting more than 250 improvised roadblocks in at least 20 states. Authorities said the roadblocks have since been dismantled.

Defence Secretary, Ricardo Trevilla announced the deployment of an additional 2,500 security personnel to reinforce operations in Jalisco as part of efforts to stabilise the region.

President Sheinbaum stated that flights to and from Puerto Vallarta in Jalisco were expected to resume as disruptions ease. Mexican authorities also moved to dispel online rumours alleging attacks on civilians at Guadalajara airport and claims that foreign tourists were being held hostage.

The operation against El Mencho comes amid sustained pressure on Mexico to intensify its crackdown on organized crime groups. Security analysts have, however, warned in the past that the killing of top cartel leaders often leads to temporary surges in violence as rival factions struggle for control.

Officials insist that security forces remain in control of the situation as investigation and stabilization efforts continue across affected areas.
